Modern add-ons for Blender provide more CAD like features but the advantage of the CAD systems is in their capacity to design with mathematical relationships.įor those with the interest - take a look at Frank Howarth's "As the World Turns" Globe project here for an imaginative use of Blender's geometric primitive shapes. The main difference between Blender and Fusion 360 or FreeCAD (another free and opensource CAD modeller) from an engineering perspective is that it is a mesh based modeller rather than a solid parametric modeller. I have a newer version of it and have used it only a few times, but when I did I thought I need to dig into this program a little bit more.īlender can be as precise as you want to make it. So I am trying to learn Blender again with the goal of using it in my woodworking and I was wondering if anyone else here is trying to do the same thing.īy the way, I used Paint Shop Pro years ago (before I was woodworking) and found it to be an awesome program. But now I think it may have become easier to learn because 1) there are lots of YouTubers making how-to videos 2) the user interface has been totally rewritten 3) there are many more "AddOns" (like extensions in SketchUP) that make it easier and faster to do different things (like create houses). Now, I've known about Blender for years and have tried in the past to learn how to use it but gave up because the learning curve is so steep.

I have used SketchUP MAKE 2017 off and on but have recently become fascinated with Blender because 1) it is totally free to use 2) it gives the user so many different ways to draw 3) it can create animations 4) it includes a video editor 5) plus so much more.
